Senior Labor MP Emily Thornberry and London Mayor Sadiq Khan are among several politicians named in the New Year honors list.
Thornberry said he was “both honored and surprised” that the dam was built.
Khan said it had already been “the honor of my life to serve the city I love” and that he was “truly humbled” to be knighted.
Conservative Andy Street, former mayor of the West Midlands, And Nick Gibb, the former schools minister, also received a knighthood.
Dame Emily told the Press Association: “My husband was knighted a few years ago and I’ve never called myself ‘Lady. Not feeling comfortable sharing her title, say Nogi’, but Dame Emily is a name I would be proud of.
She added: “I think of my grandmothers, none of whom were allowed to work as married women, and think how happy they would be to see that.”
Dame Emily has served as MP for Islington South since 2005 and is now Chairwoman of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee. He was not included in Sir Keir Starmer’s first cabinet after Labour’s general election victory.
He is now Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
A knighthood for Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor, has caused some controversy.
A petition against his selection has been organized by Conservative councilor Matthew Goodwin Freeman, who challenged Khan on the issue at a public event earlier this month amid speculation that he would receive the honour. can
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Phillips also said the award was a “reward for failure” – citing the city’s level of knife crime, and missing housing targets.
Foreign Secretary David Lemmy congratulated Sir Sadiq, saying he was proud that Britain was “a place where you can go from being the son of a bus driver”, like the mayor, to being a knight of the world.
He also noted that he had introduced policies to make London’s air cleaner, built more council houses, and provided free school meals.
Sir Sadiq worked as a human rights lawyer before entering parliament for Tooting in 2005.
Sir Andy, who was elected as the first mayor of the West Midlands in 2017, said he was only a “front man” for a project to succeed his position, and that his knighthood “Was a boon to the people. West Midlands”.
Many former MPs also received honors in the annual list.
Former MP Ranil Jayawardene, who served as environment secretary during Liz Truss’s brief tenure as prime minister, and former Conservative deputy chief whip Marcus Jones have both been knighted.
Former Labor MP Kate Holleran, who lost the seat of Blackburn to independent candidate Adnan Hussain in July, has been appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
Lord Mike Katz, national chairman of the Jewish Labor Movement, who was recently honored by Sir Kerr, has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
