Bangladesh’s veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been banned from bowling in all competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after he exceeded the maximum 15-degree elbow angle.
The 37-year-old’s actions were scrutinized by on-field umpires in his one appearance for Surrey in September – his first appearance in the County Championship since the 2010-11 season.
After the doubts of the umpires, they were asked to test.
“Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that his bowling action exceeded the 15-degree elbow extension limit,” the ECB said in a statement. as specified in the regulations.”
“The suspension takes effect from the receipt of an independent assessment on December 10, and follows the process set out in the ECB’s regulations for the assessment of bowlers reported with suspected illegal bowling action.”
Shakib, considered Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer, could not immediately be reached for comment.
To lift the ban, the left-arm spinner will have to undergo a re-evaluation, demonstrating tight elbow extension.
Shakib, embroiled in controversy of late due to political unrest in Bangladesh, retired from T20 Internationals in September and decided not to return home for the farewell Test against South Africa in Mirpur in October.
But the former captain is likely to feature in next year’s Champions Trophy.
Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League under Sheikh Hasina, whose 15-year rule as prime minister ended in August when she fled to India after deadly protests.
In 2019, he was banned for two years by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after breaching its anti-corruption code.
