New Delhi: At least 40 schools in Delhi received bomb threat emails on Monday, demanding a ransom of $30,000. ANI News Agency Police officials responded by conducting a preliminary search of the school premises.
This year, hundreds of bomb threats targeting schools, railway stations and airports were reported, many of which were later confirmed as hoaxes.
Official figures show that airlines and airports in India received 999 fake bomb threats from the start of the year to mid-November, and 12 people were arrested during the same period.
On Sunday night, two schools received threatening emails, saying that multiple bombs had been planted inside the buildings and that they would be detonated if the sender was not paid $30,000. ANI.
Several other schools received emails Monday morning, prompting school officials to ask parents to take students home for the day.
Parents were seen picking up their children from the gates of some schools as police checked the school premises for suspicious items.
Police officials in Delhi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Reuters.
In May, more than 50 schools in the adjoining suburbs of Delhi and Noida received similar bomb threat emails that turned out to be hoaxes.
