Former President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in his choice to run the Pentagon, former Fox News host Pat Hegseth, amid allegations of heavy drinking and mistreatment of women.

“Yes I do, I really do,” Trump said when Welker asked if he maintained confidence in the election. “He’s a very smart guy. I know him through Fox, but I’ve known him for a long time. And he’s basically a military guy. Every time I talk to him, he just talks about the military. He is a military man.”

Asked if senators had assured Trump that Hegseth could be confirmed, Trump said “a lot of senators call me saying he’s fantastic.”

Welker noted that Trump himself does not drink alcohol and has warned of the dangers of excessive drinking. He asked if he had concerns that his pick to oversee the U.S. military was struggling with alcoholism, according to those who worked with him.

“But I’ve talked to people who know him well and they say he doesn’t have a drinking problem,” Trump responded.
