The last black and white Doctor Who adventure to air on TV has been remade in colour.
War Games, a 1969 10-episode epic, was Patrick Troughton’s swansong as the Second Doctor.
The show has been turned into a 90-minute film led by a team based in Saltdean, near Brighton, and will be broadcast on Mondays on BBC Four and the BBC. will be displayed on iPlayer.
Mr. Tipple, who also worked on it. Colorization of the original Dalek story in 2023, said: “I was thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this story back to life for a modern audience.”
The War Games marked the end of an era for the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions Jamie (Fraser Hines) and Zoe (Wendy Padbury).
The three land in a battlefield that appears to be a World War I military zone. But all is not as it seems.
Russell T Davies, Doctor Who showrunner, said: “From the day I came back to Doctor Who, that was the plan – to color the old stories and bring them back to life.
“It looks so bright and new.”
Lead color artist Rich Tipple and his team spent 12 months working on the project.
He said: “Some people see black and white as a hindrance.
“Bringing it into color is an opportunity to open it up to a whole new audience who can now appreciate what the golden era of Doctor Who was in the 1960s.”
War Games was filmed extensively on location in East Sussex, including Brighton, Cuckmere and Burling Gap.
Mr Tipple said: “It’s a pleasure to work on something that has such amazing links to where I’m from.
“It was magic to be able to transform the places I’m so familiar with into vibrant color.”
The episode will feature a never-before-seen regeneration of the Second Doctor into the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), along with recovered footage not seen since the original broadcast.
War Games airs Mondays at 21:00 GMT on BBC Four and On. BBC Player.
