He said that the government has not only been able to dismantle many drug networks, but terrorism linked to them has also been destroyed. He said that in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh many cases of narco-terrorism have been busted and these are major achievements.
“The dark web, cryptocurrencies, online marketplaces, use of drones are still a challenge for us today,” he said.
Shah said that technological solutions to these problems have to be found through joint efforts of states and central government and technocrats for security and development of the country.
He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the war against drugs has gained a new strength.
“In the last 10 years, there has been a seven-fold increase in drug seizures which is a major achievement. The Modi government has given a strong message to destroy the entire drug ecosystem through tough action,” he said.
The Home Minister said that the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and police conducted the biggest anti-narcotics drive across the country by seizing drugs worth Rs 16,914 crore in 2024, which is an important step in creating a drug-free society.
He said that no country can move forward on the path of development in which the young generation is addicted to drugs, it is our responsibility to face this challenge together and do everything to win this war. Make efforts.
Shah said that a total of 3.63 kg of drugs were seized during 2004-14 while a total of 2.4 lakh kg of drugs was seized during 2014-24, which is seven times more than the previous decade.
He said that drugs worth Rs 8,150 crore were wasted in 2004-14 but drugs worth Rs 54,851 crore were wasted in 2014-24 which is eight times more than the previous decade.
Organized by NCB, the conference aims to address the growing concern of drug trafficking and its impact on national security with a special focus on the eight states and Union Territories of North India.
Shah also launched a fortnight of drug disposal from Saturday to January 25. He said that 100,000 kg of drugs worth Rs 8,600 crore will be destroyed during this period.
The Home Minister also inaugurated the new office complex of NCB’s Bhopal zonal unit and extended the MANAS-2 helpline to all 36 states and UTs.
The main focus of the conference was to share real-time information from the National Narcotics Helpline ‘MANAS’ portal with the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of States and UTs, review the progress of States in combating drug trafficking, and narcotics coordination mechanism.
