Lahore: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi over the D Chowk incident.
Addressing a press conference in Mansurah on Friday, he also called for the formation of a competent and credible judicial commission to investigate the incident.
Terming the firing at D Chowk as a barbaric warning to the nation, he said it was aimed at suppressing protests against a “bogus government” installed by manipulating Form 47 results.
“It was a fascist act, which is unacceptable,” he said, adding that the government was focused on crushing the people instead of providing relief. He stressed the need for a broader political consensus to heal the nation’s wounds.
Rehman accused the government of simultaneously suppressing public dissent and stifling media freedom.
He demanded immediate withdrawal of false cases against journalists Matiullah Jan and Shakir Awan and demanded their unconditional release.
He strongly condemned the government’s actions at D Chowk and said that the restrictions on freedom of expression today are worse than the restrictions imposed during the martial law era.
He also condemned the resolution of Balochistan Assembly to ban Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and termed it shameful and reprehensible.
Rehman questioned the absence of PTI leadership during the chaos at D Chowk, saying, “The D Chowk tragedy is a lesson for political leaders who abandon their workers in difficult times.”
He stressed that political parties should not function as family institutions or the property of billionaires and landlords but should embrace true democratic values.
Commenting on the state of the economy, Rehman dismissed claims that the so-called improvement in the stock market was a reflection of the national economy.
He argued that such benefits do not provide any relief to the people. He said that inflation, unemployment and lack of access to quality education are crushing people.
He also criticized the expensive privatization of national institutions and the Punjab government’s decision to hand over schools to NGOs.
Turning to Palestine, he called for global solidarity and urgent action by Islamic countries to help the residents of Gaza, stressing that November 29 should be observed worldwide as a day of solidarity with Palestine. is celebrated.
Rehman, accompanied by Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ameer-ul-Azeem, Naib Ameer Dr Osama Razi, Information Secretary Qaiser Sharif, and Emir Ziauddin Ansari Advocate of Lahore, also highlighted the growing connection between the army and the people.
“Though the sacrifices of the army are commendable, the actions of a few are creating a rift between the people and the army. Institutions should reconsider their approach,” he said.
He reiterated that Jamaat-e-Islami will continue to fearlessly speak the truth and advocate for people’s rights despite all the challenges.
