Washington — Georgetown Coach Ed Cooley admitted he was at fault for a disparaging comment he made. Illinois After defeating his team Saint Francis At home before Saturday
Cooley used colorful language to disparage Illinois when talking about the junior guard. Jaden Eppswho played his freshman season there.
“His defensive development, it’s almost like he’s a new player,” Cooley said of Epps after the Hoyas’ 82-65 victory.
He then made a comment about Illinois without naming the school.
“I’m pretty sure it’s going to be national news when I say it, but I never said it was the school,” he said.
Shortly after, he took to social media and admitted the mistake.
“My comment today was made in jest with one of my players, but I admit it was the wrong choice of words.” Colley wrote. “I have the utmost respect for the University of Illinois, its men’s basketball program, coaches and players.”
Illini coach Brad Underwood, when asked about Coley’s remarks, said he was more focused on the upcoming opponents.
“It’s not even worth wasting my time,” Underwood said. “I don’t know what he was referring to, and Jayden had a great freshman year here. But I won’t get into all that. I’m going to let my fans and everyone else have some fun, which I’m sure they probably are.”
