Bayern Munich Coach Vincent Kompany said he did not fully understand how the new Champions League format worked after his side struggled. 1-0 victory finished Paris Saint Germain to improve their chances of reaching the knockout stages on Tuesday.
Bayern needed a defensive goal in the first half. Come on man beating 10-man PSG and claiming a third win in five matches.
“I don’t look at the table because, honestly. I don’t understand it yet,” Kompany told a press conference. “It would be nice if we could win a few more matches.”
The Bavarians finished 11th with nine points from five games, one point off the top eight spots that automatically qualify for the round of 16.
In the new 36-team league format this season, teams will compete against eight teams instead of three opponents twice. They play half of these games at home and half away.
The top eight sides advance directly to the round of 16, while the ninth to 24th-placed teams enter a two-legged play-off for a chance at a place in the next stage.
“What’s important is to reach our goal. If we win our remaining games, we have a chance to finish in the top eight,” said the Belgian international in his first season in charge at Bayern.
“I’m obviously happy. Our pressure in the first half was very good. The discipline was there. We could have scored maybe one or two more goals, but the result is good.
“We are on the right track, but working to become even better.”
