Child dies after crash on Grantham A1 in icy conditions

A seven-month-old baby has died following a crash on the A1 as officers investigate whether the incident was linked to icy conditions.

The child suffered serious injuries when the vehicle left the dual carriageway and crashed into a tree near Grantham, Lincolnshire at 22:50 GMT on Thursday.

He was rushed to hospital but died shortly after 05:00 on Friday evening. A woman traveling in a Honda Jazz also suffered serious injuries when the car crashed about 500 yards from Spitalgate Junction.

The southbound carriageway is closed during the investigation.

Lincolnshire Police said two other people were in the car and were not seriously injured.

The force said it was keeping an “open mind” about the cause of the collision but said it could be linked to snowy conditions in the area. Met Office records show the temperature dropped to -2C (28F) at the time of the crash.

The boy’s family is being assisted by specially trained officers.

Alicia Cairns, Conservative MP for Rutland and Stamford, said the incident was “heartbreaking” and said her “heart goes out to her family and loved ones at this difficult time”.

Lincolnshire Police said they are keen to speak to anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time of the incident or in the past few days.
