LONDON: The man who killed his 10-year-old British-Pakistani daughter Sarah Sharif in a high-profile case that sparked public outrage has been attacked in prison, British authorities and media said on Friday. .
Irfan Sharif, 43, was ambushed by two inmates at Belmarsh Prison in London, where he is serving a life sentence for murder, the Sun tabloid reported.
The newspaper added that Sharif suffered injuries on his neck and face after being attacked with a sharp lid of a tuna tin and was treated inside the jail.
A prison service spokesman said police were “investigating an assault on a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh on January 1”. He did not provide further information.
A spokesman for London’s Metropolitan Police said a “43-year-old man suffered non-life-threatening injuries” during the alleged attack.
Benish Batul, Sharif and Sarah’s stepmother, was sentenced to life in prison last month after a “long campaign of violence” and “hateful abuse” led to the girl’s death. Sharif was given a minimum term of 40 years while 30-year-old Batul was given a minimum term of 33 years.
Their trial heard that Sarah was subjected to horrific abuse from the age of six.
Her body was found in August 2023, covered in cuts and bruises. His bones were broken and burned with an electric iron and boiling water.
Sarah’s uncle, 29-year-old Faisal Malik, was found guilty of causing or allowing her death and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
The day after Sarah’s death, the three adults fled their home in Woking, south-west London, and went to Pakistan.
After a month on the run, the trio returned to Britain and were arrested after disembarking.
