Birmingham Six: Paddy Hill dies aged 80

In a post on Facebook, the Miscarriages of Justice Organization (MOJO) said Mr Hill died peacefully at home on Monday morning.

In November 1974, 21 people were killed in explosions at two Birmingham city center pubs – the Mulberry Bush and Tavern in the Town.

The Birmingham Six spent 17 years in prison for the bombings before their convictions were overturned in 1991.

After his release, Mr Hill founded Glasgow-based MOJO, which helped people who had been in prison despite being innocent of the offences.

MOJO said its condolences go out to Mr Hill’s family “at this sad time”.

“We ask that you respect the family’s privacy,” the statement added.

“May he rest in eternal peace.”

Speaking in 2017, Mr Hill said an apology was received from a man who said he was part of the group that planted the bombs. There was an insult to the bereaved.

Other members of the Birmingham Six included Gerry Hunter, Johnnie Walker, Hugh Callaghan, Richard McAlkenny and Billy Power.

Mr. Callaghan Died in 2023 at the age of 93.and Mr. McElkinney died in 2006 at the age of 73.

Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP) leader Clare Hanna said he was “polite, articulate, combative and no-nonsense”.

He said he had “suffered many lifetimes of trauma and injustice”.
