LONDON: The BBC faced pressure on Monday to take one of its most popular and long-running shows, “MasterChef”, off the air after allegations of sexual harassment by one of the programme’s presenters. Discontinue after allegedly engaging in abusive behavior.
Presenter Greg Wallace has denied making “inappropriate” sexual jokes and comments last week after more than a dozen people came forward with allegations spanning a 17-year period. But he was forced to issue a fresh apology on Monday over his comments.
The scandal is the latest scandal to hit the taxpayer-funded British broadcaster. Another prime-time show, “Dancing Strictly,” was thrown into crisis this year amid allegations of hazing.
And former top news anchor Hugh Edwards, who pleaded guilty in July to making indecent images of children, narrowly escaped jail in a spectacular fall from grace. The production company behind the decades-old BBC show “MasterChef,” whose branded format is now produced in more than 50 countries, has said it is investigating the claims against Wallace.
It also announced that Wallace will stop appearing during the investigation, but the current taped season of “MasterChef: The Professionals” will continue to air.
