Quetta: An improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in Dasht area of Turbat district of Balochistan on Wednesday, killing at least two people and injuring four others.
According to the police, the remote control explosion occurred when the deceased were going in a vehicle.
Meanwhile, the dead bodies and the injured were shifted to the hospital. Those killed in the blast have been identified as Zaman and Umar Zahoor, while the injured include Naeem, Javed, Amin and Waheed.
This incident has come at a time when there has been an increase in incidents of terrorism in the country, which has affected Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the most.
Earlier this month, two people were killed in a bomb blast behind a Levies station in Qila Abdullah. However, Assistant Commissioner Shahak Baloch said that the deceased were carrying bombs to attack the station but before reaching their target. The bomb exploded and both were killed.
The month of November was also engulfed in violence in the province and two soldiers were martyred in an IED blast during an operation in Harnai. The martyred soldiers have been identified as Major Muhammad Haseeb and Havaldar Noor Ahmed.
Earlier, 27 people including security personnel were killed and 62 injured in a suicide attack on Quetta railway station.
It is noteworthy that the rise in terrorist attacks has coincided with the return of the Taliban regime in neighboring Afghanistan.
According to a report released by the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), the third quarter (July-September) of 2024 witnessed a sharp rise in terrorist violence and casualties in counter-terrorism operations. Violence increased by 90 percent.
A total of 722 people were killed, including civilians, security personnel and illegals, while 615 others were injured in 328 cases assessed.
About 97 percent of these deaths occurred in KP and Balochistan – the highest percentage in a decade, and more than 92 percent of these incidents of terrorist attacks and security forces operations were recorded in the same provinces.
The total deaths from the three quarters of this year have now surpassed the total recorded for the whole of 2023. The number of deaths rose to at least 1,534 in the first three quarters from 1,523 in 2023.
