Assignments have traditionally been an integral part of university education. Teachers assign them to students with the goal of enhancing learning, encouraging inquiry, and improving critical thinking. However, in today’s age of modern technology the way these assignments are handled – especially with tools like ChatGPT – has made this practice questionable. Many students, instead of completing their assignments themselves, turn to AI tools to do the work for them. These tools provide ready-made content in seconds, which students can copy and submit without any effort.
On the other hand, teachers are often aware that these assignments are not the students’ original work. Yet they continue to assign tasks in the same way, even though the tasks no longer serve their intended purpose. Therefore, the focus should now be on finding better ways to engage students in meaningful learning. Instead of assigning students traditional assignments, teachers should consider alternative methods such as presentations and debates, workshops and simulations, and case studies and problem-solving tasks.
