New York: A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a jury’s verdict ordering President-elect Donald Trump to pay $5 million for sexual assault and defamation of author E.Jane Carroll.
A New York jury found last year after a nine-day civil trial that the former president sexually assaulted Carroll in 1996 at a Manhattan department store.
Trump to pay $2 million for sexual assault and another $3 million for defamation of former Elle magazine advice columnist Carroll was ordered.
Trump denied the allegations and appealed the ruling on the grounds that two other women who said Trump sexually assaulted them should not have been allowed to testify.
A three-judge panel of the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed.
“We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” he said.
“Furthermore, he has not met his burden of showing that the claimed error or collection of claimed errors affected his rights substantially as required to warrant a new trial.”
Carroll was awarded $83 million by another jury in a separate case against Trump. He has also appealed against this decision.
Two federal cases brought against Trump by special counsel Jack Smith since his November 5 presidential election victory have been dismissed.
Trump was accused of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election, but Smith dismissed the cases under the Justice Department’s policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents. left
Trump was convicted in May in New York of 34 counts of falsifying business records for concealing payments to porn star Stormy Daniels.
Judge Joan Murchin recently rejected an attempt by the president-elect to overturn his sentence but postponed the sentence indefinitely.
