KARACHI: A six-year-old child tragically drowned after falling into an open manhole in Shah Faisal Colony on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Ibad, was playing near the wedding hall during the Aqeeqah ceremony when he fell into an open drain. His body was later recovered from a drain under the Korangi bridge, which is about two kilometers away from the accident site, police added.
Ibad, a resident of Kala Pul, had come to Shah Faisal Colony to attend a family function at his uncle’s house. Officials also confirmed that the boy’s father works in Dubai.
However, the victim’s family said that they do not want any legal action.
Despite the fact that 19 children lost their lives by falling into open manholes in Karachi alone during the last year, the latest tragic incident is a question mark on the performance of the concerned authorities.
Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Kamran Tesori took notice of the tragic incident and asked Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to take steps to prevent such incidents in future.
During the telephonic conversation, the governor emphasized the need for a joint and comprehensive strategy to tackle the problem. He said open manholes in the city had become “dangerous”.
Mayor Karachi told the governor that his focus is on fixing the manholes of the city.
