American Airlines has completed a long-awaited credit card deal with Citigroup, leaving its other partner Barclays.

The airline said on Thursday it expects payments it receives from its co-branded credit cards and other partners to grow 10 percent annually. In the 12 months to Sept. 30, American brought in $5.6 billion from those deals.

American said it would begin moving its Barclays cardholders to Citi in 2026, but did not provide details.

American said Citi will handle credit card sign-up promotions such as promotions on flights and airports.

The airline’s current partnerships stem from its 2013 merger with US Airways.

CNBC Reported In September, the airline was in talks with Citi to make the bank its exclusive credit card partner.

Co-branded deals are important for airlines. Carriers sell frequent flyer miles to banks, generating billions of dollars and generating profits for the airlines. In return, banks get a captive audience of customers who are encouraged to swipe cards not only for travel but also for everyday purchases.

Delta Airlines outbid American in its co-branded credit card program. It earned nearly $7 billion from its partnership with Delta last year American Expressand the carrier expects that to grow to $10 billion over the long term.

U.S. shares rose more than 6% in premarket trading after the company unveiled a new Citi deal and raised its earnings forecast for the fourth quarter.
