Alabama A&M University Now it’s saying Medrick Burnett Jr., a redshirt freshman linebacker, isn’t dead after issuing a statement early Wednesday, saying otherwise.
The athletic department retracted its statement on the 20-year-old Burnett. Injured in a game against Alabama State earlier this season.
The revised statement said the initial news of Burnett’s death came “Tuesday evening from a family member.” It ended up being a lie.

“Our staff acted in accordance with the family member’s wishes to notify the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate incident,” the second statement said. “After hearing from a UAB Hospital representative this afternoon, we learned that he is alive.
“We express our immediate regret for spreading false information. However, we are absolutely delighted to learn that Madrick is in stable condition.”

Burnett’s GoFundMe page, set up by her older sister, Dominice James, released her statement Wednesday.
“Please pray that he is going through a difficult time but we are persevering till the end. May God give us the strength to keep the faith,” the statement said.
The GoFundMe previously explained that Burnett was dealing with swelling from a brain bleed and head injuries suffered during a game in late October.
“She had to have a tube inserted to drain the water to relieve the pressure, and after 2 days of intense pressure, we had to opt for it. A craniotomyJames said on the GoFundMe page, which was a last resort to help in the effort to save his life.

Burnett played in five games for Alabama A&M this season, registering five total tackles.
