ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has been appointed as a member of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).
According to a notification issued on Thursday, Gohar’s nomination, nominated by Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Umar Ayub, was approved by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi.
Gohar has become a member of JCP after Ayub resigned from PTI. Similarly, Senator Barrister Ali Zafar was also notified as a member a day ago after Senator Shibli Faraz bowed out.
Both the PTI leaders are of the view that they resigned from their posts due to several cases registered against them after the PTI protest in Islamabad.
Faraz and Ayub were nominated along with two other lawmakers from the Upper House and the Lower House last month after the forum was reconstituted following the implementation of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
This body is headed by the Chief Justice of Pakistan and includes two senators, two MNAs, three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court, the most senior judge of the Constitution Bench, the Federal Law Minister, the Attorney General, an advocate. Having less than 15 years of practice experience in the Supreme Court, nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council for two years.
The JCP is tasked with appointing judges to the Supreme Court, High Courts and the Federal Shariat Court, as well as monitoring the performance of High Court judges and preparing their annual performance review.
Meanwhile, in his resignation, Senator Faraz had said that he had always had “a strong desire to play a meaningful role in improving the judicial system in the country and upholding the principles of justice”.
He said the role was not only deeply challenging but very close to his heart, given its vital importance to the national interest, especially in the light of recent reforms and the increasing erosion of justice that the nation was facing. is
“Unfortunately, I find myself embroiled in a series of unjustified false cases. Despite my efforts to clear the allegations, a fresh wave of FIRs were registered against me, further exacerbating my condition. “These circumstances have made it impossible for me to devote the undivided attention and attention that this important responsibility demands,” he said, citing the reasons for his resignation. said
Similarly, the leader of the opposition in NA, Ayub, had also said in his resignation that he could not remain a member due to several FIRs and legal cases against him.
Ayub expressed confidence that Barrister Gauhar will be a valuable asset to the Commission due to his legal acumen, integrity and dedication.
