KABUL: An Afghan TV station has been shut down after its office was used to dub “obscene” programs for banned media, the Taliban’s Ministry of Ethics said Thursday, according to channel employees. Six persons have been detained.
The Ministry for Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (PVPV) accused people working within Arzu TV of providing content to Afghan media outside the country, which has been heavily restricted and criticized by Taliban officials.
PVPV said in a statement announcing the station’s closure, “Some people were using the name Arzu TV to commit acts that were against Islamic values and national traditions.”
“It became clear that some people used the Arezzo TV name and building as well as their position at the media outlet to pay temporary workers to dub vulgar serials and programs that were financed by the exiles. Media outlets outside the country were against Islamic and Afghan norms and traditions,” he said.
Six people were arrested when the office was raided, two employees with Arezzo told AFP on condition of anonymity.
