KARACHI: 17-year-old Muzaffar Iqbal tragically lost his life during a robbery in Karachi on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place in Korangi’s Janjapura Goth, which has led to an alarming rise in robbery-related murders in the city. This is the third death in such incidents since January 1, 2025.
SSP Korangi Kamran Khan said that the incident took place when four robbers fled the scene after looting a house in the morning.
Muzaffar, returning home after Fajr prayer, raised the alarm. In response, the robbers opened fire, killing the youth on the spot.
SSP Korangi added that the robbers had just looted a house in the neighborhood of the victim. According to SSP Korangi, the SHO Zaman Town and local post in-charge have been suspended after the incident.
The fatal shooting follows two other robbery-related deaths earlier this month. On January 9, a citizen named Arif was shot dead during a robbery in Ghaghar Phatak area of Steel Town.
Earlier on January 3, Sahil Masih was killed by bandits in Korangi’s Zaman Town.
While Karachi has seen a gradual decline in street crimes, incidents like this highlight ongoing challenges. Sindh recorded a 20 percent reduction in crime last year, according to official data.
Notably, 77 percent of robbery-related murders were solved: 98 cases of robbery-related murder were registered, resulting in 112 arrests and 33 other deaths in police encounters.
Similarly, the police solved 70 percent of cases involving injuries during robberies. Out of 321 such incidents, 226 cases were solved as a result of which 36 accused were killed and 332 were arrested.
Despite these improvements, Karachi continues to suffer from street crime and robbery resistance.
A total of 1,778 murders and 2,526 attempted murders took place across Sindh in 2024, including injuries during extortion bids.
