A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off California’s northern coast on Thursday, prompting tsunami warnings for large parts of the California and Oregon coastlines, officials said.
The US Geological Survey said the quake, which struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), was centered about 39 miles (63 kilometers) west of the town of Ferndale, a sparsely populated part of the Northern California coast.
The National Tsunami Center issued a warning for a long stretch of the US West Coast, from Dunes City, Oregon, south to San Francisco and San Jose, California, 400 miles (643 km) away.
San Francisco and much of the surrounding Bay Area was under a tsunami warning.
