The Sindh Police Chief has ordered the creation of an enforcement unit in each district of Karachi to reduce traffic problems by implementing the relevant laws. He said the unit’s staff would be equipped with body-worn or other cameras to ensure prompt resolution of traffic problems and enforcement of laws.
Presiding over a meeting at the Central Police Office on Saturday, IG Ghulam Nabi Memon said that the unit will deal with encroachments, illegal parking, speeding and erratic driving, while unlicensed drivers will be dealt with strictly. And an FIR will be registered against them. habitual offender.
He said the unit would also deal with the investigation of serious crimes like fatal and life-threatening traffic accidents and murders. He added that the unit will determine the causes of the accidents and identify those responsible so that the matter can be resolved.
He also said that it is the sole responsibility of the traffic police to deal with traffic problems so that the perception of their performance is better. He added that SPs concerned should be present on the roads during traffic hours and the affected obstructions should be removed immediately.
Memon said that the main cause of traffic problems is unlicensed and inexperienced drivers. He further said that parking outside the wedding halls also causes disruption in the flow of traffic, so parking should be arranged by talking to the owners of the wedding halls.
He said that the aim of the awareness campaign is to make the residents understand that driving without a license, speeding and taking shortcuts can prove fatal. He further said that the concerned institutions should be informed about the factors causing disruption in the flow of traffic.
The meeting was also informed that from January 1 to 9, 9,785 challans were issued and 21 FIRs were registered for violations of helmets, side mirrors, front and rear lights and driving without license by minors.
Thirty-eight FIRs were registered for encroachment, 3210 were issued for illegal parking and 917 were issued for disrupting the flow of traffic. Since December 21, 9,785 challans have been issued for driving without a license and 1,288 for one-way driving while 4,216 challans have been issued for violation of traffic signals.
Since January 1, 5,612 vehicles of unlicensed drivers have been impounded before being released on assurances of obtaining a learner’s licence, including 608 vehicles of underage drivers who were released after assurances from parents. It was said that young drivers will not drive on the roads again.
Traffic police awareness campaign is still going on, various social organizations are collaborating in this exercise. The driving license DIG said that since the awareness campaign, the license branches have been receiving triple the number of applications, with 1700 to 1800 licenses being issued daily. He emphasized on conducting a similar campaign in Sindh as well.
