LOS ANGELES: A nighttime curfew has been imposed in areas affected by the devastating wildfires that have ravaged large parts of Los Angeles, County Sheriff Robert Luna said Friday.
“You cannot be in these affected areas. If you are, you can be arrested,” he told a press conference. “We’re doing this to protect the structures, the houses that people have left because we ordered them to leave.”
The rule, which will take effect between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in the Pacific Palisades and Eaton fire areas, comes as fears of looting increase, with some residents organizing street patrols and armed guards at their homes. have
“We’re not doing this to hurt anybody,” Luna said.
“This curfew will be strictly enforced and is being taken to enhance public safety, protect property and prevent any theft or looting in the area which has been vacated by residents.”
Anyone who violates the curfew can be jailed, Luna said.
“I have directed that if anyone is caught doing this, they will not be cited or released. They will be booked.
