“This guy was trying to run over as many people as possible,” Kirkpatrick said, adding that two police officers were hit by gunfire but were in stable condition.
Mayor LaToya Cantrell called it a possible “terrorist attack,” but Alethea Duncan, an FBI agent who spoke with other officials Wednesday morning, didn’t describe it that way. Authorities did not provide any information about the man driving the truck, and his condition and whereabouts were not immediately clear.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry Called him “a horrific act of violence” and said he and his wife “are praying for all the victims and first responders at the scene.” He appealed to people to stay away from the area.
The popular tourist district was apparently packed with New Year’s Eve revelers at the time of the attack.
“He was eager to make up for the carnage and the damage it caused,” Kirkpatrick said.
Witnesses told CBS News reporter Katy Weiss that a white truck sped into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street, and the driver fired a weapon from inside the vehicle, prompting police to return fire.
The city of New Orleans said in one The statement was posted online. 30 people were injured and shifted to area hospitals and 10 people were confirmed dead. Kirkpatrick later said at least 35 people were hospitalized.
Duncan said possible improvised explosive devices were also found nearby, but said it was unclear if they were related. No other information was provided.
Duncan said the FBI will lead the investigation. The White House said President Biden had been briefed on the attack and that his administration had been in contact with Cantrell to offer assistance.
Weiss saw several people on the ground treating the injured near the intersection of Bourbon and Canal Streets.
Jim and Nicole Moore were in New Orleans visiting from Iowa and witnessed the incident. Nicol told CBS News that he had seen a fireworks display in the city and was enjoying the New Year’s Day atmosphere in the French Quarter when he heard the crash from down the street. He said he then saw a white truck “speeding” through a barrier.
Movers said they heard gunshots after the crash and tried to help those they found injured, but realized the victims were dead.
“We were pretty, very close to where it started,” he said, estimating that the truck hit the people just a block away from where they were walking.
“Once it passed us, we heard gunshots, saw the police running toward it,” Nichol said. “Once the shooting stopped, we stayed in the alcove until the shooting stopped, came out into the street, and met a lot of people – who were killed, [we] Wanted to see what we could do to help.”
The movers said the victims they saw had injuries from being hit by the truck, and they didn’t see any obvious gunshot wounds. They left the area when emergency responders began arriving, he said.
