A seven-year-old boy has been miraculously found alive after being missing for five days in a Zimbabwean park that is home to lions, leopards and other wild animals, the wildlife authority said on Friday.

ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farao said the boy wandered into the Matusadona National Park next to his village on December 27 and was found five days later and about 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) away.

Pharoah said in a statement that he had been surviving on wild fruits and water he had dug up in riverbanks, a technique popular in Zimbabwe’s drought-prone areas.

“Remarkably, it is estimated that he traveled 49 kilometers from his village through the tough terrain of the tiger-infested Matusadona National Park to the point where he was found,” said Farao.

As soon as the child was reported missing, rangers, locals and the police immediately started searching for him, but due to heavy rains, their efforts were hampered. His footprints were spotted on December 30 and the boy, Tenotenda Pando, was found soon after, they said.

Mutsa Murombedzi, a lawmaker from the area, said the child was admitted to hospital and was weak but had no injuries. “It was a miracle that he survived,” he told AFP.

“He was smart enough to … sleep on rocks sitting up so that tigers and other wild animals could not reach him,” he said.

“Villagers helped in the search, beating drums hoping he would follow the sound,” the MP said. But he was only found with the help of rangers who were able to go deep into the wilderness to find him.

According to its website, Mutusduna National Park, near Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, is home to many wild animals, including lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo.
