A couple trapped in the flood was rescued from the car.

An elderly couple have been rescued after being trapped inside a car during flooding, the fire service has said.

Specialist rescue crews were deployed to Bridge Rive near Chilmley in Devon at around 10:50 GMT.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue (DSFRS) said the car was “partially submerged in floodwaters”.

On arrival, he said, crews found “water had reached the door handles and was moving in and out of the vehicle”.

“Expert rescue crews used a boat and water safety equipment to rescue the two occupants who were uninjured but left in the hands of ambulance crews to be assessed,” DSFRS added. “

The fire service has advised the public to never drive or walk through flooded areas.

It said: “Even gentle water can sweep you off your feet, there can be hidden dangers such as open drains, damaged road surfaces, submerged debris or deep channels.

“Never drive through flood water, vehicles can get stuck and be swept away in just 30cm of flowing water.

“Do not travel unnecessarily in bad weather conditions, you can harm yourself and others.”
