A widow has backed calls for a fire safety review at a Perth recycling site.

The widow of a man killed in an explosion at a Perth recycling center is backing calls for a review of fire safety at the site after the fourth fire in four years.

On Tuesday, fire crews fought. Another fire at the sitewhich is under new ownership.

Recycling firm Enva said it was investigating the fire which closed the nearby Friarton Bridge and brought parts of the city to a standstill.

Mrs Smechel told BBC Scotland News that “every day has been a challenge” since her husband’s death.

In addition to the fatal fire in 2023, there were fires at the site in April 2021 and September 2022.

Mrs Szmeichel said Slawek was a “loving, caring and bubbly” partner and father to her son.

But she said she was left in the dark due to a lack of updates on the investigation into his death.

Mrs Smechel said she had heard nothing since the end of the Police Scotland investigation last spring.

And the widow said an update to the firm’s fire safety procedures was urgently needed to ensure no family had to suffer the same.

“Every day is like a challenge because every day I just wake up and try to push myself,” she told BBC Scotland News.

“When I heard about the latest fire, I felt exactly the same way I did two years ago in February, I couldn’t believe something like this was happening again.

“We’ve had our worst day, but I don’t want another family to be in our position.”

The latest fire broke out at 03:00 on Tuesday afternoon and smoke from the fire forced the closure of Friarton Bridge, which is right above the site, for around ten hours.

Recycling firm Enva – which has been operating the site since August 2023 – said the fire started in an external storage bay and was likely caused by a battery leak.

The company said the fire was caused by electrical waste entering the reception area.

It “effectively worked out” the site’s design and containment measures to prevent spills from spreading to the central recycling facility or other buildings.

The firm said the incident would be the subject of an “immediate and thorough investigation”.

Mrs Szmeichel said the impact on the local community due to the closure of the bridge could also be devastating.

He said: “There may be a pregnant woman, going to hospital or going to a funeral, appointments, surgeries, she can’t get to her destination there.

“It’s just something that I don’t think is acceptable.

“Regardless of what happens, it’s not going to bring my husband back.

“But in my view there is nothing more important than making sure it doesn’t happen again. No one should be in danger in places like this.”

Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Murdo Fraser has called for a safety review at the centre.

He said: “There is clearly a problem with fire risk.

“As we’ve seen, the consequences of a fire there are dire.

“We also have to ask how appropriate it is for such a center to be located so close to a major trunk road given the impact on travel.”
