Rep. Nancy Mace, RS.C., and Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, had a heated exchange at a House hearing Tuesday that ended with Mace asking Crockett if she wanted to take him out.
The war of words took place during the civil rights and transgender rights debate, with Crockett criticizing Mace’s rhetoric about transgender people and reestablishing a subcommittee on civil rights.
“I can see somebody’s campaign coffers are really struggling right now. So.” [Mace] ‘Trance, trans, trans, trans’ to make people feel threatened, and kids, listen —” Crockett said.
“I’m not a kid, don’t call me a kid, I’m not a kid,” Mays interjected, prompting an unsuccessful call to order to Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky.
“If you want to take him out, we can do that,” Mace said to Crockett.
Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla. tried to defend Crockett, saying Mace had incited the violence against him.
After some debate, Comer ruled that Mace’s comment was not a call to violence, saying that he had asked Crockett for “a cup of coffee or maybe could ask to go out for a beer.
Spokesmen for Mace and Crockett did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.
However, both turned to X to defend themselves.
Mays posted about the incident a dozen times. Admitting that she went “off” on Crockett but calling her out didn’t mean she wanted to fight.
“Let me be clear: I wanted to take the conversation off the floor to have a more constructive conversation, not a fight. At no point was there any intent to harm anyone,” he wrote in one post.
Crockett said on X that she was threatened, and called Mays “an attention-seeking loser.”
“Last I checked, threatening members in the committee room doesn’t cut the price of eggs at all.” He wrote.
Mace has become known in recent months for his actions on behalf of transgender people. After electing the first openly transgender member of Congress, Rep.
