Carly Mahnke, 27, in a cobalt blue coat, was a bright sight among the countless people strolling down West 43rd Street in midtown Manhattan on a Friday in December.
Originally from Nashville, Ms. Mahnke is an aspiring musician who goes by the stage name Frau. She said she prefers sustainability in her clothing choices: Her mother bought a blue coat from Anaconda Vintage, a Nashville store, four years ago, Ms. Mahnke said, and her scarf and pants, too. It was second hand. He further said that Ms. Mahnke made her own gloves.
Discussing her dress, Ms. Mahnke said she couldn’t remember the last time she bought a brand new dress off the rack. “In a culture obsessed with being on trend,” she said, “I’ve found satisfaction in loving one-off pieces and the forgotten.
