Starbucks says it is changing its cafe rules in North America to allow people to use its facilities even if they haven’t bought anything.
The changes, which will come into effect on January 27, are a U-turn from a policy introduced six years ago that allowed people to stay in Starbucks outlets and use their toilets without making a purchase.
The move is part of a “back to Starbucks” strategy – a plan announced by the firm’s new boss as he tries to tackle flagging sales.
The world’s biggest coffee chain says its new code of conduct – which also tackles harassment and bans smoking and alcohol outside – is aimed at making its stores more welcoming.
A Starbucks spokesperson told BBC News that “the implementation of the Coffee House Code of Conduct … is a practical step to help us prioritize our paying customers who want to enjoy sitting in our cafes.” are”.

The company said the new rules will be displayed at each store and staff will be instructed to ask anyone who violates the code to leave. This includes allowing employees to call the police if necessary.

Other changes to be introduced later this month include offering a free refill of hot or iced coffee to customers who buy drinks to drink on the premises.
