King Charles has officially returned to his royal duties as he continues his cancer treatment.
The palace confirmed that Charles will make an emotional visit to the historic site, a milestone trip never before made by a British monarch.
However, Queen Camilla previously visited the site for the 75th commemoration in 2020.
The King will travel to Poland to visit Auschwitz to mark the “significant” 80th anniversary of the Holocaust.
“I think I have to for the 80th birthday,” Charles said of the visit The Telegraph. “It’s very important.”
He also noted that the number of survivors is slowly dwindling, which means there won’t be many people left to tell their stories. “I can’t stand the dwindling numbers left behind,” he admitted.
The update comes after King Charles hosted his first royal event of the year when he invited Holocaust survivor Manfred Goldberg, 94, to Buckingham Palace along with representatives from organizations dedicated to the cause.
For his visit to Poland on January 27, Charles will join heads of state, presidents and prime ministers from around the world for a poignant commemoration at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial.
