Sara Sharif’s father Irfan Sharif, who was convicted of murdering his 10-year-old daughter last month, was attacked inside Belmarsh Prison. Sky News reported on Friday.
Irrfan reportedly had cuts on his face and body which required stitches. According to jail officials, he received medical treatment inside the jail for his injuries following the attack on Thursday.
A prison service spokesman said: “Police are investigating an incident of assault on a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh on January 1.”
However, the spokesperson declined to provide further details about the incident, calling it “inappropriate” while the investigation is ongoing.
In addition, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said officers were “investigating an allegation that a prisoner was assaulted at Belmarsh”. He said that the injuries suffered by Irfan were not life-threatening.
Irrfan and Sara’s stepmother, Benish Batul, was sentenced to life in prison last month for years of brutal abuse and “horrendous torture” that led to the 10-year-old’s death.
The court was told Sarah suffered “unbearable pain, anxiety and fear” as she was repeatedly beaten, burned, bitten and physically restrained at the family home in Woking, Surrey.
Irfan was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years while Batul was sentenced to 33 years. Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, was also convicted of causing or allowing her death and was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
In a televised sentencing at the Old Bailey, Justice Kavanagh said Sarah’s death was the culmination of “years of neglect, repeated assaults and what can only be described as torture”, particularly at the hands of Sharif. .
The senior judge said she was subjected to “abhorrent treatment” “in plain sight and in front of the rest of the family”.
He told Sharif: “You treated him like this because you felt it was your right to impose strict discipline on him.
“Sarah was a brave, passionate and passionate child. She wasn’t as submissive as you wanted her to be. She stood by you.”
