Earlier in December, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odhu had said that in a meeting it was decided that something out of the ordinary had to be done in view of the rapid increase in traffic accidents in the city.
Odho said that steps will be taken to prevent traffic accidents to improve the traffic system.
This year, 479 fatal accidents took place in the city and 345 FIRs were registered. FIRs are not registered for some incidents, or cases are not registered for deaths due to one’s own fault or bike skids.
Dumpers, water tankers, minibuses, trailers and large vehicles are involved in 50% of the accidents. Heavy vehicles need to be controlled, challans have been increased for heavy traffic negligence and violation of rules.
About 57 percent of accidents are due to negligence of small vehicles, he said, adding that a total of 470 people lost their lives in accidents this year, of which 50 percent occurred in Kemari, Gharbi and Malir.
Odhu said that more than 7,000 drivers have been arrested and cases have been registered against 350 others.
