Famous Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away at the age of 90 on Monday. Benegal’s daughter Piya has confirmed this. Benegal breathed his last at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai at 6.30 pm. He celebrated his 90th birthday with himself 10 days ago on December 14. Benegal is survived by his wife Neera Benegal and daughter.

Benegal’s sister-in-law Piya Benegal said Mumbai breathed its last after being admitted to the hospital due to severe kidney disease. You said, “Shyam Benegal passed away at 6:38 PM in the Wockart Hospital. He was suffering from kidney disease from the front.”

Film and political personalities also started reacting to the news of the death of a great personality of Bollywood. Its president Mallikarjun Kharge has written a letter to ‘X’ saying, “We are deeply shocked by the death of legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal. He is a towering figure of Indian cinema and a true pioneer of the parallel cinema movement.” He further writes, “His tremendous contribution to the art form is momentous through thought-provoking talk and deep engagement with social issues. Kharge praised his efforts, adding that “His works like ‘Bharat, Ek Khoj’ based on Pandit Nehru’s ‘The Discovery of India’, and ‘Samudhyan’ which that it is based on the debates of the Constituent Assembly, a valuable qualification for a young audience.

Benegal is remembered for his new age films. Benegal was credited with pioneering parallel cinema in films in the 1970s and 1980s in the form of ‘Ankar’, Indian films through ‘Ankar’, Nishant’ and ‘Manthan’. ‘Bhumika’, ‘Janoon’, ‘Mandi’, ‘Seventh Horse of the Sun’, ‘Mummo’ and ‘Sardari Begum’ are considered among his art films in Hindi cinema. In his illustrious career, Benegal has produced films documentaries and vision serials on text issues, including ‘Bharat Khoj’ and ‘Snavidhaan’.

Shyam Benegal was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2007, he was awarded the ‘Dada Sahib Phalke Award’, the highest honor of Indian cinema. He was an election film winner. Also, in 2012, he was honored with the ‘One Sea Lens in Cinema Award’ of the Asian Cinema Foundation. He was honored in London for his outstanding contribution to the Indian film industry.
