Thirteen people were killed when a Navy speedboat collided with a ferry in Mumbai

At least 13 people have died after an Indian Navy speedboat lost control and collided with a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai, a navy spokesman said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said three navy personnel were among the dead, while more than 100 people had been rescued.

Footage of the incident, posted online, showed the speedboat circling before colliding with the ferry, which later overturned.

The Indian Navy said there was an “engine malfunction”.

The privately-owned ferry was heading to Elephanta Caves, a popular tourist destination, when it collided with the speedboat.

“A Navy vessel undergoing engine testing lost control and collided with a passenger ferry,” the Navy said in a statement.

A passenger on board told ABP Majha news channel: “The speedboat hit our boat and water started entering our boat and it capsized. The driver asked us to wear life jackets.”

“I swam for 15 minutes before another boat rescued me,” said the passenger, who did not want to be identified.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted: “Boat accident in Mumbai is tragic. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
