PDC World Darts Championship 2025 results: Gerwyn Price wins as tearful Cameron Menzies loses

Grand Slam quarter-finalist Menzies slumped to a shock defeat by veteran Gates.

The 54-year-old never looked back after posting a 138 check out in the opening leg against the Scot, who booked a place in the last four of the WDF World Championships in 2022.

As Gates swayed his hips after nailing the doubles, and was supported by chants of ‘USA, USA’, his opponent faced jeers and looked frustrated as the match progressed.

Menzies, whose co-star Fallon Sherrock plays Ryan McCall on Tuesday, took deep breaths and appeared to wipe away tears between throws in the later stages.

“I was definitely aware of that. [his emotions]”But at the same time, I want my opponent to play their best against me to see if I can play my best against them,” Gates said.

“I told him to harness the energy of the crowd, keep coming and do your best to grow the PDC.”

Gates will now face two-time major winner Nathan Aspinall in the second round on Wednesday.

Before Price’s headline act, another Welsh win on night two was provided by Robert Owen, who came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Dutchman Niels Zonveld with a 121 check out.

Owen’s first Eli Paly win sets him up against 2023 semi-finalist German Gabriel Clemens in Thursday’s second-round match.

England’s skit, a quarter-finalist at the Players Championship, inspired the crowd to get behind him and gave him a show with a 101.92 average and 56% checkout success.

Nicknamed ‘The Sniper’, Scutt rose to the top of the Secondary Challenge tour order of merit and dominated New Zealand’s Robb, who had now lost all five of his World Championship matches.

The 28-year-old Scot faces Australian number one Damon Hetta in the second round on Saturday, when teenager Luke Littler also makes his tournament debut.
