Accra: Former Ghanaian President John Durham Mahama won a historic recall election on Sunday after the ruling party conceded defeat with voters chastising the government for its handling of the economic crisis.
After Saturday’s election, New Patriotic Party candidate Vice President Mahamadu Bawumia acknowledged on Sunday that Ghanaians want change as he failed to address frustration over the high cost of living.
His defeat ended the NPP’s eight-year rule under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose final term was marked by the West African state’s worst economic downturn in years, high inflation and debt defaults.
For Mahama of the opposition National Democratic Congress Party, president from 2012-2017, this was his third attempt to reclaim the top post after unsuccessful 2016 and 2020 elections.
