Police are investigating Labour’s Edinburgh council leader Cammy Day.

Allegations of Cammy Day’s behavior are being investigated by police.

The leader of Edinburgh City Council, Labour’s Cammy Day, is being investigated by police over alleged inappropriate behaviour.

Scottish Labor confirmed he had been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation.

According to the Sunday MailCllr Day with messages “bombed Ukrainian refugees”.

The newspaper alleges that he asked her sexually explicit questions, tried to meet her for drinking dates and complimented her on her looks.

The paper spoke to two refugees – who came to Scotland after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 – who say Cllr Day was sending them messages.

He said that because of his position in the council, he was unable to ignore his unethical practices.

A spokesman for Edinburgh City Council said: “All matters raised with the Chief Executive and Monitoring Officer have been progressed through our established process in consultation. [with] Our independent whistleblowing service, Safe Call, and where appropriate, Police Scotland.”

Labor leader Anas Sarwar on council leader’s allegations

A Scottish Labor spokesman said: “The Labor Party takes all complaints seriously.

“They are thoroughly investigated in accordance with our policies and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.”

Speaking on BBC Scotland The Sunday ShowScottish Labor leader Anas Sarwar called the allegations “deeply distressing”.

He said the party became aware of the claims on Saturday and Cllr Day was immediately suspended.

Sarwar said it was for the police and the council to decide whether further investigation was needed, and it was right to let the proceedings take their course.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “On Tuesday 22 October, we received a report of inappropriate behaviour.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

Cllr Day has led the local authority since May 2022, but opposition politicians on the council are now calling for his resignation.

Cllr Smita Kumar, who leads the SNP group in Edinburgh, posted on social media that Mr Day should “resign immediately.”

Sue Weber, Scottish Conservative MSP for Lothian, said: “Cammy Day should stand down as council leader while these allegations are investigated.

“Of course there is no way he can win the support of the local Labor group, and will be unable to play a vital and important role as leader of the council.”

The leaders of the council’s Liberal Democrat and Conservative groups have made similar calls.
