LAHORE: Free Solar Panel Scheme aims to provide lasting relief to people from expensive electricity, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif said while officially inaugurating the free solar panel scheme for one lakh consumers in Punjab on Friday.
He said, “Punjab residents can apply for the scheme through SMS or online portal starting today. Earlier, 7.3 lakh consumers in Punjab were benefiting from a subsidy of Rs 14 per unit. Public Resources will now be used exclusively to ensure the convenience and relief of the public.
During the event, the Provincial Energy Secretary while briefing the Chief Minister about the scheme said, “Under the program, 100,000 solar systems will be installed in one year. These systems will be provided free of charge to electricity consumers who consume up to 200 units per month.
The Chief Minister was informed that 55,019 consumers using up to 100 units per month will get a 550 watt solar system free of charge, while those using 101 to 200 units will get a 1,100 watt solar system at no cost. Registration for the scheme can be done through the online portal cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk or by SMS to 8800.
They were also informed that verification would be done using the reference number and CNIC mentioned in the monthly electricity bills. The computerized ballot will ensure transparency in the allotment process. Additionally, a helpline will be established to guide and assist eligible users.
To enhance security, solar panels and inverters will be linked to the customer’s CNIC to prevent theft. The scheme is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tonnes and reduce the subsidy burden on the federal government.
