Lahore: Police have arrested an accused involved in the murder of Rana Amar Akhtar, a student of gender studies department of Punjab University.
Initial investigations revealed that the fatal gunshot was fired by a friend inside a car, contrary to earlier reports that motorcyclists were involved. According to police sources, the incident took place when three friends Dilawar, Huzaifa and Ammar were traveling together. Dilawar was driving, Ammar was sitting in the front seat, and Huzaifa sat in the back with a gun. A bullet fired from inside the car hit Ammar, seriously injuring him.
After the firing, Huzaifa fled the spot while Dilawar rushed Amar to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police are now investigating whether the shooting was accidental or the result of an argument between friends.
Meanwhile, the Punjab University (PU) administration has initiated disciplinary action against the Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists for their involvement in vandalism following the killing of a university student yesterday.
The spokesperson of Punjab University said that the university administration has identified 11 IJT workers involved in the attack at various places with the help of eyewitnesses and footage, while the process of identifying 30 unknown IJT workers is going on. He said that a letter has also been sent to the disciplinary committee to take legal action against the miscreants involved. The spokesman added that the IJT had falsely alleged that motorcyclists fired at the student. He said that the IJT lied about the death of the student. He said that IJT has tried to damage the reputation of the university by spreading rumours. He said that the university administration will take action against the students involved in the incident without any pressure and without discrimination. He said that the university administration will ensure a peaceful environment in the university at any cost. He said that bullying in the campus will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Despite a senior police officer and the FIR mentioning that the killing took place on the university premises, a Punjab University spokesperson claimed that the mention of the campus was clearly based on rumours, which is yet to be investigated.
