PESHAWAR: In terms of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this year has been the worst in the last 15 years as 636 incidents have been reported so far, surpassing 631 attacks during the previous year.
According to the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) statistics, 636 incidents have been reported so far in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially the southern districts. This is the highest number since 2009 when 728 cases were reported.
A day ago, the all-party conference held at the KP Governor’s House expressed concern over the worsening law and order situation in the province and asked the federal and provincial governments to take swift and decisive action to pave the way for lasting peace. Take action. Attacks have been on the decline in KP over the years and in 2018 less than 100 incidents were reported from the whole of KP.
However, an increase in attacks began in 2021 as more than 270 incidents were reported. And after that a trend of increasing attacks on the police was also observed. During this year, 142 police personnel were martyred and 214 injured in terrorist incidents in KP. The civilian death toll stood at 133, while 246 others were injured.
Out of the 636 attacks, 355 incidents involved police, security forces and automatic weapons firing on others. Apart from this, six suicide attacks and 113 improvised explosive devices were also reported during 2024.
Dera Ismail Khan, the hometown of the provincial governor and chief minister, as well as Tank and North Waziristan had the highest number of incidents of terrorism, followed by Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Bajaur. According to the CTD report, 2981 intelligence-based operations were conducted during the year.
It added that a total of 739 terrorists including 29 most wanted were arrested. The report said that 246 militants were killed this year. During the operations against the terrorists, 849 kg of explosives, 162 hand grenades, seven suicide jackets and 162 different types of weapons were recovered.
