Cilento also noted that a team of investigators is at Thompson’s home near Minneapolis.

“Remember, to get a lead on murder, you must interrogate the victim,” he said. “And you go back and forth in circles from there — his emails, communications with his wife, communications with his family members, communications with current employees and former employees. Did he threaten her in any way? Was she just denying the health care company something?

He added that while he was not surprised the suspect “was able to escape in such a short period of time, his days are numbered.”

He said investigators were putting “a lot of resources” into the investigation so they wouldn’t be caught early. And it’s impossible not to leave an electronic footprint, despite the suspect’s attempts to check into his Manhattan hostel with a fake ID and pay in cash before the shooting.

“They’re running down every lead,” Cilento said. “So, there’s a team in Minneapolis, there’s a team dedicated just to recovering the video, which in itself is a painstaking and difficult task. And it’s not just recovering the video.

“Thousands, in total, thousands of hours of video to go through. And detectives are looking for video somewhere to get a glimpse of this guy. There are other detectives searching the NYPD body cameras on the off chance that He unmasked and walked past a policeman with his body camera on, and the only way to do that is to do it, and I can assure you, he’s being watched is.”
