For the first time, Muhammad has become the most popular name in the UK, according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The name replaces “Noah” as the second most popular name on the list, with Oliver in third place. The Telegraph.
As for the most popular baby girl names, Olivia remains the most popular name for the eighth year in a row, with Amelia and Isla coming in second and third on the list respectively.
The ONS, each year, analyzes the latest baby name data to reveal the most popular and unpopular names in the UK.
In its data scoring, the ONS found that 4,661 boys were born and named Muhammad in England and Wales in 2023. In 2022, the number was 4,177.
Compared to the second most popular name in 2023, only 4,382 Noahs were born, down from 4,586 last year.
The Arabic name Muhammad means “praiseworthy” or “praiseworthy”. It is derived from the word “hamad” which means “to praise”.
Muhammad, known as the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) who was the messenger of Islam, is common in regions with strong Muslim majorities, including the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia.
Additionally, the ONS also discovered some geographic variation in the most popular names, with Olivia being the most popular girls’ name in five of nine regions in England, the most popular in Wales, while Mohammed was the most popular in four of nine regions.
