This is in reference to G. Akbar Plaju’s letter on ‘Assignments Old’ (29 November 2024). I believe there is room to expand the author’s critical reviews. Rather than dismissing traditional assignments as obsolete, it’s worth considering how they can be redesigned to address the challenges posed by AI tools. Incorporating oral components, such as viva sessions or presentations, can validate the originality of student work while encouraging deeper understanding. It is important to see AI tools not only as threats to educational integrity, but also as potential allies in the learning process. When used responsibly, AI can help students brainstorm ideas, refine their arguments, or get instant feedback. Educators should guide students in ethically leveraging these tools, turning potential misuse into an opportunity for skill enhancement.
