International Day of Special Persons was celebrated.

ISLAMABAD: National Special Education Center for Hearing Impaired Children H-9/4 celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a United Nations declaration to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities at all levels. The day is celebrated every 3rd of December. To raise awareness of society and development, and the situation of persons with disabilities in all aspects of political, social, economic and cultural life.

This year the IDPD celebrations were organized by the Directorate General of Special Education in collaboration with the Centre’s Parent Teachers Association. The HIC Center is the largest center of DGSE in terms of area and enrollment where about 600 Deaf/HI students are being provided social rehabilitation through education, pre-vocational training and full communication. Highlights of a dynamic and colorful multi-faceted program throughout the day reflecting the theme of the day: All children with disabilities participated in the event from various centers of the Directorate General of Special Education and shared their joy of the day. 14 student coordinators for the event including 10 from college wing and 2 each from SSC section boys wing and girls wing lead all the activities along with signing interpreters.

The students of HIC Center presented the national anthem in sign language, the visually impaired students had the pleasure of reciting the Holy Quran and Naat Rasool Maqbool. Mentally challenged students gave a mesmerizing performance on the Sufi verse “Tere Ishq Nachaya”. Special children dressed up in colorful costumes and celebrated their day with joy and enthusiasm. Students from special education centers especially enjoyed the jumping castle, cotton candy stall and puzzle games. A fun fair was organized by differently abled students along with their teachers and staff with stalls selling ethnic food and bakery items, henna and face painting, handicrafts and handmade jewellery. The stalls also showcased rehabilitation equipment and resources designed and used in service delivery centers and training institutions.

Throughout the day, NADRA mobile vans attended the premises and facilitated special persons and parents to register as PWDs with NADRA. Thematic Art Competition at College Wing NUML, with material support from students of Department of Applied Psychology. An orientation session was conducted on plantation and its importance to fight environmental hazards like smog. The special children also planted saplings and flowering plants along with the students of Nimal University.
