A British sports team has been robbed at gunpoint on the first day of their US tour.

The indie group, which has scored two top 10 albums in the UK, lost their passports, stage gear and personal belongings in the incident after a thief broke into their tour van in Vallejo, California’s Bay Area. Robbed.

In footage shared with the BBC, the thief can be seen pointing a gun at the group’s tour manager as she approaches the van.

“Obviously if someone pulls a gun, you run for cover,” singer Alex Rice said. “But what struck me about it was the resignation. People around us weren’t panicked at all. It seemed like an everyday occurrence.”

The incident happened around 5pm UK time (9am in California), as the group departed for the opening date of their tour, in nearby Sacramento.

They stopped for breakfast at a Starbucks when a passerby alerted them to the robbery in progress.

“Someone opened the door and said, ‘Does anyone have a white Sprinter van? Because you’re just being robbed,'” drummer Al Greenwood told the BBC.

“So we all ran out screaming. Our tour manager, Lauren, was a little ahead of me, and someone else ran in the opposite direction from us, and said, ‘Watch out, he’s holding something.’

“I actually thought I was seeing someone get shot, because it took a while for our tour manager to realize,” she added.

“In the video, you can hear me yelling at him to get down.”

The footage was filmed by another band member from inside the Starbucks. In it, you can hear the crew quietly advising the group to get off the road.

“Guys, come in. Please stay in,” says a woman’s voice, as the bandmates file back inside the entrance.

“It was very frustrating as they continued their shift,” Greenwood said.

“They started serving drinks right away,” Rice added.

When they contacted police, Band says they were advised to “fill out an online form” about the robbery, and no officers were dispatched to investigate.

The BBC has contacted the local police department for comment.

According to the group, the thief smashed the passenger window of their tour van, and mainly targeted electronics, including film cameras and laptops they use on stage.

They lost all their passports and documents, as well as a suitcase containing their clothes, “so we’ll be wearing the same things for the next two weeks”.

Greenwood also lost his journal in the incident.

“I know it sounds funny,” he said, “but that’s almost the worst part”.

Fortunately, the group’s equipment was stored in a separate, locked compartment in the back of the van.

The band, who are promoting their upcoming third album, Boys These Days, are hopeful they can play the opening show of their tour on Tuesday night.

‘We’re certainly not going to let that stop us,’ Greenwood said.

“And ultimately, it really makes you reflect on the things you’re grateful for both here and at home.”

The tour will even return to the Bay Area on Saturday night.

“We’re going to keep playing,” Rice said. “We have nothing against the Bay Area. We think it’s great here — but it’s sad that it’s come to a place like this with gun violence.”
