South Indian weddings have roots in religious and traditional rituals. Be it Mubarak Mehrtam or the tying of the sacred thread (mangalsutra), every ceremony has spiritual value. On the other hand, North Indian weddings are distinguished by ceremonies like Haldi, Sangeet, Jota Chupai and Sangeet.

Seal and time of marriage
A striking difference between the marriages of the two regions is the timing and timing of the marriage. A South Indian wedding starts early in the morning and ends around 10 am. In contrast, a North Indian wedding begins in the evening and lasts until the next day.
Wedding dress and jewelry
In South India, brides are usually dressed in a traditional silk saree while the groom wears a dhoti or mandu. As far as accessories are concerned, the bride accentuates the look with gold jewellery, it’s all about religion and cultural values. Both northern and southern weddings are about a variety of foods that reflect diverse culinary traditions. Foods served at South Weddings include Dosa, Idli, Vada and several rice dishes. For others, there are non-vegetarian options as well. On the other hand, northern weddings include rich curries and flavorful kebabs. Rich desserts like jalebi, gulab jamun and delicious biryani from the tandoori kitchen are also part of the menu.
Wedding dance and music
Indian weddings are incomplete without excitement and a happy atmosphere. Traditional instruments like Nadaswaram and Mridangam and music like Bharatnatyam and Carnatic play an important role in southern weddings. Vibrant folk dances such as gada and bhangra, sounds of shehnai and dhol, and Bollywood music and dance performances are central to North Indian weddings.

Length of wedding ceremonies
South Indian weddings last for three to five days. Families spend more time together, attending religious ceremonies dedicated to rituals. Northern weddings are relatively short and take place within three days.
