The enraged man set the Ether electric scooter on fire Enraged by mounting repair costs and malfunctions, a 38-year-old man from Thirumli Vile set his electric scooter on fire in Ambattur, shocking onlookers. The man, identified as Parthasarathy, a collection agent, claimed that he resorted to “extreme measures in front of the company’s showroom in the hope of getting justice”.

Despite attempts by the news agency to reach the company, there was no immediate comment from the car maker Aether Energy on the matter. There was no response. A recent incident of a man pouring petrol on a scooter and burning it went viral. The showroom staff tried to convince him that the issues he had raised would be looked into.

He assured them that the matter would be resolved immediately. The vehicle was taken for inspection to assess the damage. As he remained unrelenting, the police were alerted and the fire was extinguished. The police, and passers-by who had gathered, were shocked to learn that the vehicle had been set on fire by the owner citing some unresolved complaints regarding his scooter.

Parthasarathy was later released by the police after giving a stern warning. He claimed that the problems with his scooter started when he bought it for Rs 1.8 lakh three years ago and he had to visit the dealer frequently for repairs.

“They have asked me to replace the bearings every 5,000 km and kept postponing the service citing non-availability of spares,” he alleged. Parthasarathy said he was disappointed when he was asked to replace both brake pads, wheel bearings and belts.

He claimed that on an average he spent Rs 5,000 per month on servicing or replacing spare parts and that over a period of time, the total cost exceeded the original cost of the scooter.
